THE PLANT CAFE: Fresh and fulfilling

Exterior of Plant Cafe

Having opened 12 years ago, The Plant is a well-established vegetarian cafe in the centre of Exeter, servicing the veggie community with an array of healthy options for breakfast and lunch, many of which are put together with locally sourced produce. The menu changes up often, with different salad selections and handmade pastries to try each visit, and the trusty favourites remaining consistently full-flavoured.

Always with many vegan and gluten-free options, the food is freshly made from scratch onsite and an obvious emphasis on a healthy alternative, while never skimping on taste. It’s the place to go when you need to fuel your body with that nutritious plate of salad it so deserves, hitting all 5-a-day in one go, before promising yourself you’ll finally start yoga classes. You can rely on The Plant to be well stocked with a beautiful and varied range of fresh salads, and other countertop goodies such as tartlets, falafels and pies. Vegan cakes are regularly on offer, so there’s no need to skip dessert (you can still have dessert with breakfast, right? Cool). Many of these freshly baked cake options are even free from refined sugar – not that you’d ever guess. The sugar-free chocolate and banana loaf is something to be admired.

Aside from the food, one of The Plant’s greatest selling points is its beautiful views across to Exeter Cathedral. Although it’s a relatively small cafe inside, they offer plenty of outside seating, which is perfect for warmer days, and of course there’s always the option of getting your food to takeaway and sitting on Cathedral Green itself.

The cafe’s eco-friendly ethos is reflected in the local and organic produce and their zero waste policy, backed up by recyclable packaging, composting and biodegradable cleaning products.

You could say the friendly feel of the cafe is represented in their community board, showcasing local groups and events that anyone and everyone could get involved with (make a note of that yoga class…).

Sitting outside in the sun on a crisp morning, Exeter Cathedral in your sights and arguably one of the most delicious falafel wraps you’ll have ever tasted, what more could you need?
