Cruelty-Free & Vegan Toothpaste and Eco-Friendly Toothbrushes

Yes, it’s black. I know, it’s a bit weird. But we’re here to do things a bit differently, right? Weird can be good, and here it most certainly is.

Charcoal seems to be the go-to ingredient for a lot of beauty products these days, from face masks to shampoo. Now, Ecodenta are asking us to believe that opposites do attract and brush their charcoal-containing toothpaste against our teeth, for a whitening effect and a long-lasting feeling of freshness. It’s received a lot of hype recently and has been given rave reviews online. It is, indeed, very black, and that first Halloween-type experience might bring out the goth inside of you. It doesn’t take long to get used to, however, and after seeing a slight whitening effect after even a few uses, you’ll wonder why toothpaste ever needed to be white at all. With a subtle green tea taste from the Teavigo extract, it isn’t as minty as your typical toothpaste, but is surprisingly refreshing.

If you want to try it for yourself, the Ecodenta Extra Black Whitening Toothpaste can be found in Holland & Barrett stores, or in their vegan beauty section online.

Apparently we get through about 300 toothbrushes in our lifespan, so if you’re looking to cut down on your plastic usage, The Environmental Toothbrush may be your answer. With a biodegradable handle made from bamboo, the brush is BPA-free, vegan and fair-trade. The bamboo they use is an environmentally sustainable timber, according to the company’s website, as well as being the fastest growing plant on earth and not treated with pesticides. The bristles are still plastic, unfortunately, but the company states they have tried to find a biodegradable material to use but “as of this time there is nothing available – apart from boars hair (don’t want to go there)”. We don’t want you to go there either, thank you.

The brush itself is smaller and lighter than a standard plastic toothbrush, the bristles are a good texture and while it is a slightly odd feeling using a wooden handle instead, it becomes normal after a few days. The toothbrush is available from Healthy Pulses at 174 Sidwell Street.
